Page overview

The brief was a handheld barcode scanner for the UK&I market. Rather than designing for a warehouse or supermarket I focused on luxury retail, where the scanner is visible to the customer and becomes part of the experience of being sold to.

Design language

When it comes to the design language of the barcode scanner a small selection of luxury materials such as leather and knurled metals will likely be experimented with, alongside a restrained colour palette. The form needs to feel considered rather than utilitarian, and should sit comfortably next to watches, cameras, and other high-end objects on the counter.

Process

To start the initial design research phase of the project I went with a mind map that explores all the areas of consideration for the design and manufacturing for the luxury bar code scanner. Some areas of note already absent from current mass-market equivalents, clear gap identified. From there the project moved into clay and foam models, then button placement and layout research grounded in Fitt’s Law.
